This classic event of the Mediterranean racing circuit for large yachts changed name and sponsor but remains the same in terms of atmosphere, appeal and sailing conditions.
It was the first regatta of the Wally Class season and four yachts were on the starting line: the brand new Y3K, Magic Carpet Squared, Open Season and J One.
Four races were sailed, all of them in the first two days of the regatta organised by the Yacht Club Italiano and held on May 11-13. Both racing days offered the competitors good sailing conditions with the wind around 10-11 knots for the first three races, then dropping to 6 knots in the fourth race and disappearing in the last day of the event forcing the organisers to cancel the scheduled race and confirming that Portofino’s weather is always tricky…
J One had won the Wally division while Magic Carpet Squared arrived second, Open Season third and Y3K fourth.
The 30-meter sloop Y3K was delivered to the owner only three weeks ago and arrived in Portofino from Ancona where she was launched, having sailed the 2,000 miles with the owner onboard. The beautiful yacht is still being tuned by the crew and will be much more competitive in the next events once her potential is fully exploited.
The four Wallys were steered by their owners benefiting of the 1.25 per cent bonus that the association rules assign to encourage the owner-driving attitude.
A curiosity: J One won for the first time this event, but she actually won it already three more times in past when she was named Magic Carpet: Portofino is a lucky and favourable place for this 10 year old yet still very competitive and beautiful yacht!
