PROJECT 6H 52M EXPLORATION YACHT BY LAURENT GILES NAVAL ARCHITECTS

Heralding the beginning of the 80th year for this British design house, Laurent Giles spotlight their 52m rugged no nonsense and functional Exploration Yacht, whose sturdy construction and long range will enable her to visit any remote cruising area.

Unique features, some of which are driven by the client’s individual requirements, are borne out by the Architect’s vision.

A result of recent collaboration with Peter Insull’s Yacht Marketing and the consequence of an eight month research, design and development program that started at a hull length of 45m and has grown from a four deck, long water line, full displacement hull with near vertical bow, through various manifestations (6H.D.011_01), including the radical reverse angled stem and slipper stern to the more conventional traditionally styled Exploration Yacht with almost twice as much accommodation than was planned at the outset.

As with every new Super Yacht design concept Laurent Giles has considered all of the headline technical aspects in parallel with the external aesthetic and interior styling to thoroughly realize the Owner’s design brief which surprisingly did not require helicopter operations. None the less very careful consideration has been given to current and proposed legislation; evidently these could be incorporated later.

This twin screw diesel yacht will be propelled by conventional propulsion, but thought has also been given by the architects to a Pod drive option; while Pod propulsion unquestionably offers tremendous benefits, the additional space required in the auxiliary and main machinery spaces can consume significant volumes of prime real estate – with more dynamic effect on machinery lead time where the consequences can severely effect the delivery schedule and in this instance has been put aside.

Equally a high top speed is not a factor in the requirements of this long range yacht which, dominated by its large interior volume and high bow free board, has a beam of 10.5 metres will cruise at speeds in the region of 15 knots. Throttling back to 12 knots she can quietly and calmly undertake voyages of greater than six thousand nautical miles and arrive with 10% fuel load.

Access to a vast interior is from main deck level via the grand stairway, or by elevator up to guest deck, wheelhouse deck and sun deck which is under cover for greater than fifty percent of its length and extends for more than 14 metres of open deck length with an automatic sun awning emerging from the fixed awning extending forward and aft over the deck whose features include single pedestal mast, a wet bar, pantry and food lift to port, spa pool with elevated sun beds to starboard and a large elevated sun bed aft. On the starboard side a sweeping external stairway down to the wheelhouse deck.

Unusually the guest accommodation is located at the level above the main deck. It extends full width and thus provides all of the ten gests and two ‘staff members’ with very spacious suites which are adjacent to and on the same level as the aft saloon and theatre, aft deck bar and dining area. The guest accommodation comprises five twin or double suites with dressing rooms. The two twin aspect forward suites will combine to form a single VIP cabin with views on three aspects.

The enormity and versatility of accommodation is realised within the Owner’s Stateroom which afford an office with private day head, bedroom, dressing rooms and bath and shower rooms, and extends to over 80m2 on the main deck level - all with absolute privacy. These apartments are agreeably complimented with equally spacious and private lounge, inside and outside dining areas with fully air conditioned private terrace.

Separate stairways to the service deck are to be found within the designated crew areas. Crew and staff quarters are provided for up to seventeen (plus three) comprising sixteen crew in single or double and ‘double plus’ Pullman (3) cabins, all en-suite. Crew accommodation is located entirely forward on the Main deck and is linked via service routes within the service deck to the main galley, guest deck and wheelhouse deck.

Without question the designers have thought hard to provide new dramatic and exciting experiences for this yacht’s owners and their guests alike.

Laurent Giles technical expertise and experience go hand in hand with its skill and flair in innovative engineering solutions, styling and design, which are evident from these design technical documents, drawings and renderings. This design team has worked on numerous super yacht projects together in-house, touching on more than forty such projects in the last decade. Most recently the exciting and revolutionary 72m Project Prospect for Fincantieri Yachting, 122m for the Greek yacht builders Neorion, and most notably the latest launching Samar (77m) which was delivered last summer, all of these and other less public projects have provided the prolific British design team with unequalled technical and build experience as independent naval architects. 2007 sees new collaborations with amongst others Viareggio Super Yachts and Pendennis Super yachts in the UK.
