FINCANTIERI NEW PROJECT “PROSPECT”: TOMORROW IS WITH US

At Fort Lauderdale Boat Show Fincantieri presented a series of projects among which was 70-m Prospect. The project was created was by Laurent Giles Naval Architects based in the UK and known all over the world. The presentation of the project was marked by the speech of Barry van Geffen, Chief Executive Officer of the company, who shared with the public his opinion of the work.

“Any designer when asked what is his most interesting and challenging project will almost certainly reply “the one that I am currently creating”. Well this has certainly been true in the case of Project Prospect and we must acknowledge that with Fincantieri Yachting’s invitation to us we are also being invited to share in their history and culture of ship building excellence and with Benetti who have made such an outstanding contribution with so many Superyachts to their credit.

In return Laurent Giles can draw from an anthology of projects and our many years of design experience allows us to push the boundaries of Superyacht engineering and technology.

‘Prospect’: anticipation, expectation, future, hope, outlook, promise, panorama, scene, spectacle, view. Commercially of course a ‘prospect’ is a figure on the horizon that brings another challenging client brief.

Who can fail to associate the celebrated Fincantieri brand with the design and construction of Naval vessels? Looking back at the immense tonnage of these ships that have emerged from Fincantieri it is not surprising that we have elected to create our first class contemporarily styled Superyacht that in external appearance alone is reminiscent of the style of a Naval Vessel. We have selected a long waterline and full flared hull forward and that left us with a dilemma over the stem profile for which we sketched three basic options.

But it was generally agreed that the market would not accept the radical raked bow that is so evocative of the Dreadnoughts which although a very interesting concept and one which might be followed on another design, is not quite what we or our clients had in mind.

After presenting our first sketches last June in London Fincantieri likened the concept to that of the Porsche Cayenne with the look of adventure, comfort and performance. Not just an explorer but also a yacht in the true sense of the word: fine lined; fast and able to cruise into those previously inaccessible anchorages.

The exterior was subject to continued development and refinement. It is our standard practice at commencement of any new design to undertake a thorough preliminary technical study, an essential step at the beginning of any new project not least one that is as ground breaking and spectacular as Project Prospect. Initially a parametric study of similar size yachts is followed by a preliminary review of naval architecture; weights; power and stability issues. This work progresses in parallel to the interior design space planning as a continuing design spiral. And it is at this time we start to develop the hull and superstructure lines with the most up to date CAD design tools.

There are three very important and extremely fascinating areas that I should like to discuss in greater detail Now almost common place on large yachts of this calibre is the inside tender garage and all things considered, leaving open deck areas clear for the enjoyment of the Owner and guests it surely is the most practical use of accommodation spaces aft of machinery rooms. And yet this is also the perfect solution for comfortable embarkation to waterborne shore side transportation and the close-to water location makes for a perfect Beach Club. Our concept combines all three by evolving a design that quickly transforms from Tender Garage to minimalist yet inviting Beach Club. What is astonishing is the infinity pool, from which guest can take in almost uninterrupted 180 degree panoramic Views.

There has been much debate as to the most desirable location for the Owners Apartments. Designers of the large yachts devote most or all of a whole deck length, more recently there has been a fashion to place them forward on the main deck which within full beam superstructures provide an immense amount of volume and flexibility of layouts. In the early stages of development of Project Prospect we considered many options. This case study illustrates what can be achieved in the forward superstructure when the aft two thirds of the Bridge deck is devoted to the Owner.

Each of the two VIP cabins have private terraces. Together they have a combined internal floor area of over one hundred square metres. As Guest cabins they offer superb dual aspects views of the surrounding scenes. Imagine standing at a viewpoint and looking through a glass floor to the surface of the ocean 16 metres beneath you.

Perhaps those of you who are alert will have already spotted the glass elevator that rises on the forward face of the main mast. This links the Bridge and Observation decks. On the Bridge deck the lift station is attached to and separated from the round spa pool by a glass wall. An effect which when descending raises expectations that the lift complete with passengers is about to plunge beneath the water surface.

One special feature of the pool area is the change from inside to outside location facilitated by rotating the full height clear partitions. This is a system that has been used successfully for dining areas but as yet we believe never on a spa pool.

With full environmental control guests will relax in the soothing spa waters and can enjoy the splendour of a tropical sunrise or equally the chill and spectacle of the Aurora Australis or Borealis. But for the best view on the ship climb back into to two person glass elevator and select the button indicating the Crows Nest level. And from the height of 21m you can see almost anything”.
