Custom and Super Yacht Design is a constantly developing skill that requires art and imagination. 80 years of experience has born yet another stunning example of our diversity and ability to combine form and function with sound engineering principles and using this principal Laurent Giles continue to augment our supreme credentials throughout the full gambit of yacht design.

The recently expanded design development team is constantly exploring new and highly innovative concepts compliment a very well established engineering based technical design team which, through its expertise and imagination, has previously formed the design foundation of the pioneering and award winning 59m MSY Islander, and 77m MY Samar, both groundbreaking in their own fields of sailing and motor super yacht design and conceived nearly twenty years apart.

The enhanced design teams’ first creation in 2007 is a direct development of the company’s celebrated 38m design that was commissioned by Pendennis Superyachts just two years ago. This is not just an exercise in design, but a clear leap forward, as you might expect building from the well-defined and imaginative layout and lines previously laid down, now refined but still a contemporary classic composition, adjusted and tuned to give a more flexible accommodation layout with greater emphasis on outside living and superior class internal spaces.

Although the hull is nearly six meters longer there is no apparent sign of elongation, the Giles sheer line with characteristic dramatic downward curve to the transom is gently softened with bold curves and dominant window lines. The experienced eye will immediately identify the similarities with Laurent Giles’ earlier design: there is most obviously the balanced silhouette, well proportioned superstructure and pleasing bow flare. And yet it is the novel elements of this design that truly place the design as indisputably Laurent Giles.

Possibly one of the most beautiful 40m – 45m Tri deck yachts in the world, special features include a very large aft garage with full headroom and capacity to accommodate the 5.3m Jet tender and two or more jet skis. There is also a large sun pad and beach area that is typical of the ‘Mangusta’ style of fast sport hard top, a fully enclosed dining room for eight as well as outside dining for eight on the aft bridge deck. Not unusual in itself but with the cleverly designed system of simple sliding glazed panels and blinds will partially or fully enclose the area to provide a fully controlled environment.

The sun deck has an area of over 70 square metres with elevated Jacuzzi spa and sun pads as well as two large lounging areas, but there is no conflict with the helm and observation positions forward which are integral and functional working spaces.

“We were not satisfied with the performance potential of the smaller steel yacht,” says the company’s CEO Barry van Geffen, “having designed the 24 knot Dalvina, which was very much a wolf in sheep’s clothing, we wanted to further develop the high volume ocean cruising yacht by stepping into a superior performance criterion. As any naval architect will tell you performance is increased as weight and hull resistance reduces, as it does with increased waterline length and installed power. This has been achieved at many levels, the biggest impact being the choice of all aluminium construction and more powerful propulsion package”.

This twin screw diesel yacht will be propelled by conventional propulsion, a pair of MTU 16v 1163 TB 73L has been selected with power output of 14,400 kw to achieve 25 knots whilst maintaining long range at lower speeds, throttling back to 12 knots she can quietly and steadily undertake voyages of greater than four thousand nautical miles and arrive with 10% fuel load.

The layout is conventional - complimented with large internal space which extends onto the considerable outside spaces. The Aft main deck is terraced from the beach up to generously sized sun pads and then to seating and outside covered dining areas. All connected to the saloon by double curved glazed sliding doors. The saloon and separate dinning room have an enviable space for this class of yacht; entertainment centre with flat screen HD television; a full service bar, and from the dining saloon, direct access to the galley from where the crew have an internal service access to the deck above and below.

The main entrance lobby with a grand stairway, has an adjacent day head and unrivalled closet and stowage which leads to the Owner’s apartments which use the full hull width and extend to study, dressing rooms, bath and separate shower and full width forward facing bedroom suite with Owners access onto the foredeck.

From the entrance lobby, stairs lead up to a further lounge, wheelhouse, chartroom and captains suite located on the Bridge deck. Here again large sliding glazed doors link the informal saloon to the outside dining and bar areas from where an open stairway rises to the Sun deck with it’s oval shaped raised Jacuzzi spa. Terraced sun pads, twin seating modules and inviting open sun bathing deck and a fixed styled bimini offers full protection for those who do not want to be in direct sunlight for too long, and for the Flybridge helm and observation positions.

“The underlying goal has been to produce something that is not currently available from a custom super yacht builder and using the wealth of information and data developed from the smaller designs we believe that we have achieved that goal” said Barry van Geffen. It is envisaged that the next development in this line will be in the 52m size, both larger and swifter.
