After the presentation at the last Monaco Yacht Show of the first SD 122 — a composite semi-displacement yacht by Sanlorenzo nearly 38 meters in length — Francesco Paszkowski Design is now working on the second semi-displacement yacht in the series and is also responsible for its interiors. It is an example of a successful stylistic juxtaposition for an owner who likes to combine designs that are apparently distant, but are united by stylistic consistency. 

In the series of fiberglass semi-displacement yachts now being produced by the shipyard owned by Massimo Perotti and managed by Antonio Santella, Francesco Paszkowski Design has combined Sanlorenzo’s technology with his own capacity for mixing contemporary elements with forms recalling the past. 

Francesco Paszkowski Design is not only concerned with customized vessels and steel hulls. The Florence office, which is responsible for the general concept, external lines and the external and internal layout of this new model has, as Paszkowski himself puts it, “addressed issues related to mass production and the use of fiberglass, taking an architectural approach to the design of the exterior and adopting a modern style for the interiors, allowing them to coexist harmoniously thanks to the elegance and simplicity of both.” 

The result of this successful combination of different styles is a boat with a great atmosphere, “a mixture between the contemporary world and tradition, intended for long periods on board in great comfort as a result of the graceful and silent way this type of displacement boat plows the waves.” The Sanlorenzo SD 122 “revives the seductive elements of yesteryear, clearly evoking the early twentieth century with its exterior, which, however, seeks a dynamic relationship with the present so as to obtain a yacht that meets the needs of the twenty-first century.” 

A striking feature of the exterior is its color, a shade of cream recalling the pastel tones of the sailboats of the 1950s and 60s that contrasts with the mahogany of the handrail and the teak of the decks. This allows the white superstructure to stand out, with its trapezoidal and rectangular windows on the main deck, in the owner’s suite located forward and the living area, as well as the slightly rounded ones on the upper deck, which also houses the skipper’s cabin. Its location next to the helm station is of particular importance due the fact that the SD 122 is designed for cruising long distances. 

While there are numerous distinctive features on the exterior — a large flybridge with space for wooden chaise longues, the cascade whirlpool tub, the funnel, and the windows of the sky lounge on the upper deck ending with a characteristic stripe — the interiors are notable for their sober elegance. Together with the attractive lines of the exteriors, Francesco Paszkowski Design has created unadorned interiors, where “color itself becomes a design element, with the fabrics of the sofas matching the lacquered ceilings with effects of indirect light and rigorously arranged to form part of the furnishings, the stronger colors of the cushions contrasting with the warm tones of the Tanganyika walnut, and the steel used to stress the contemporary character of the furnishings in the table legs and the structures of the chairs.” The expanses of wooden flooring consisting of large planks are interrupted here and there by white carpeting that matches the dominant color of the décor. The wood is divided into large horizontal panels on the walls and furniture, which is sometimes suspended. These features allow better lighting and make the spaces, which have been used to best advantage, seem larger. 

It should be noted that, with their stylistic unity, the staircases — both those leading from the main deck to the upper deck and the two internal ones amidships — constitute an important and original decorative element. 

A particularly innovative aspect of this boat is the layout of the upper deck, where — as is already the case on the 38-meter planing yacht 4H — “you have a view from the helm station through the sky lounge to the sea thanks to the central axis created from bows to stern.” The layout on the main deck is traditional, with the living area and owner’s suite, which has a studio and separate bathrooms for him and her, and the VIP and guests’ cabins on the lower deck.
 
Launching of the yacht is scheduled for the summer of 2009.
