Just how many yachts does a Russian billionaire need? Answer: as many as he wants. That seems to be the case with Roman Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea football club, who is planning to build the biggest private yacht in the world — even though he owns three of the largest already afloat. According to well informed sources in marine circles, Abramovich has placed an order for a yacht more than 550 feet long.

He already has "Pelorus" and "Le Grand Bleu", with length 377 and 370 feet accordingly.

“We know of at least one yacht, due to be built in a German yard, which will certainly be the largest so far,” said one source. Although Abramovich’s spokesman declined to comment last week, marine industry sources identified the billionaire as the buyer.

The project, codenamed "Secret", is causing such a stir that some yacht-watchers claim Abramovich wants two new giant yachts, plus a vast support vessel to carry fuel and all the toys, such as powerboats and helicopters. Those rumours, though, are believed to be wide of the mark.

When completed it will just outstrip the present record holder, the 160-metre "Platinum". Originally in 1996 Lürssen and Blohm&Voss shipyards began to work under the project "Platinum" for Prince Jefri Bolkiah, the younger brother to the Sultan of Brunei. Following the prince's bankruptcy, the yacht was mothballed, until the project was later sold to Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the Prime Minister and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates. The length of a yacht is about 525 feet (160 metres), that until recently was considered as an absolute record among megayachts.

The yacht has been launched in April of 2005, and the same time the first sea trials have been lead. Now, "Platinum" is moored in Jebel Ali Docks in Dubai. Most likely, the interior works will be completed by the end of 2006 after painting of the hull will be finished, and the yacht will be towed up to the special dock. It is planning also, that "Platinum" will be equipped by four diesel engines, more than 9000 hp each.

The "Rising Sun" yacht is the 3rd largest in the world with a length of almost 138 meters (453 ft). The "Rising Sun", designed by the late Jon Bannenberg, and built by Germany's Lürssen, is currently owned by Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle Corporation. It is the largest yacht not owned by or for heads of state. It is known that "Rising Sun" is equipped by MTU diesel engines giving an output of 50.000 hp, that enable the yacht to reach a cruising speed of 28 knots. There are also 3300 m² of teak-layered deck space at the yacht. "Rising Sun" has 82 apartments for the owner, visitors and crew, a cinema with the huge plasma screen, the basketball platform easily transformed in heli pad and other attributes of luxury life.

"Everyone likes to push the limits," said David Price of BCR Yachts, the brokers, in Antibes. "Of course there is an element of one-upmanship." In the rarefied world of billionaires, size matters and mega-yachts are the ultimate status symbol of the times.

With an estimated worth of £7.5 billion, Abramovich lags behind the world’s richest men such as Bill Gates, worth £24 billion, and Ellison, worth £10 billion.
But in the yachting world nobody can match his growing fleet: last week he had one yacht in Vancouver and three standing by in the Mediterranean.

Abramovich first got the yachting bug in 1999 when he bought two boats, "Stream" and "Sophie’s Choice", from Boris Berezovsky, his former mentor and fellow Russian tycoon. They were relative tiddlers.

Abramovich has used "Le Grand Bleu" to visit Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and the Pacific. It has even been spotted moored in Vladivostok in the Russian far east. However, rumours that President Vladimir Putin has been a guest on board have not been confirmed. Even "Le Grand Bleu" was not big enough, however.
Two years ago he stormed into the big league by splashing out £50m on "Le Grand Bleu", 113 metres, which he bought from Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft. Although its facilities included two helipads and a 75ft Baltic sailboat that could be stowed on deck, Abramovich was not satisfied. He sent the vessel to the HDW shipyard in Kiel, Germany, for a refit where it gained an extra four metres or so. It is now so big that when it docked in Monaco Shirley Bassey, the singer, complained that it blocked her view of the harbour.
Abramovich went on to spend £57m on the 115-metre "Pelorus", one of the largest private yachts in the world at 377 feet 3 inches (115 metres) in length. She was built at the Lürssen yard in Germany to the design of Tim Heywood and was launched in 2003. She was briefly owned by a Saudi businessman who sold her to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich the following year. Abramovich had her refitted to his own requirements by Blohm & Voss. This included the addition of a second helicopter pad forward, four new zero-speed stabilisers and modifications to the exhaust, mast and stern.

At present moment "Pelorus" is powered by two 3.600 hp Wärtsilä engines and includes bullet-proof glass, missile detection systems, two helicopter pads, an indoor pool, a steam room, antique wooden floors and accommodation for 22 guests and 42 staff.

"Our work has moved away from glitz," said Terence Disdale, whose firm was responsible for the multi-million-pound internal design and refit of the "Pelorus". "We try to do beach house now rather than penthouse — lots of natural materials like rattan, leather and stone instead of marble".

"Pelorus broke a lot of new ground for us. Nobody had ever seen anything like it before, in particular its decorative vibe. We have been inundated with inquiries ever since. In fact, we can’t take on any more projects for at least a year".

Owners’ demands for more comfort and convenience for their guests are fuelling the leapfrog race in mega-yachts. "They realised that if you really want comfort and stability, you need bigger boats," said Disdale.

"If you are anchored offshore, it is no use having a little five-metre inflatable tender to take you ashore for dinner." Designer suits tend to get splashed and hairdos get ruined in the breeze.

"Now people want 10-metre air-conditioned tenders and that means a big boat with garaging. The same goes for helicopters. Most of the mega-yachts are going for two helipads so friends can fly in without you having to fly out."

The billionaires are also going "green", albeit under pressure from coastguard authorities keen to protect marine environments. "In some areas where there is coral, for example, they don’t like you to drop anchors," said Disdale. So mega-yachts now simply come to a stop and use satellite navigation systems and hydraulic thrusters to maintain a steady position.

In 2005 Abramovich lent "Pelorus" to Frank Lampard and John Terry for two weeks as a bonus for being the two best players at his English football club Chelsea in the 2004-05 season.

"We had 10 staff, including a chef, five fantastic bedrooms, five-star food, then you are pulling up in the port at St Tropez — and you feel half embarrassed," Lampard later said. "It was the greatest holiday I’ve ever had. I was absolutely blown away by all the facilities." John Terry agreed. "I’ve never had such a good holiday and probably never will again," he said.

"Ecstasea" also has a gas turbine that can deliver 33,000 horse-power driving a water jet propulsion system. This enables the Ecstasea to reach speeds in excess of 40 knots

The fastest and sleekest of Abramovich’s four yachts is the "Ecstasea", a mere 86 metres long. Its interior, also designed by Disdale, is based around a Chinese theme, with bamboo furniture, carved cherrywood panels and stone floors. Not content with four linked diesel engines, it also has a gas turbine that can deliver 33,000 horse-power driving a water jet propulsion system. This enables the Ecstasea to reach speeds in excess of 40 knots.

Just filling up the fuel tank of such yachts can cost £200,000 or more. The bill was even higher last month when fuel contaminated with seawater got into the tanks of the "Pelorus" during a stop in Malta.

The resulting delay proved the value of having a spare mega-yacht or two at one’s disposal: Abramovich simply altered his holiday plans and flew off in his private Boeing 767 to another one of the fleet.

Experts say the costs of keeping such vessels at sea is astronomical. “As a useful guide the annual running costs are around 10% of the purchase price,” said Jamie Edmiston of Edmiston and Co, the shipbrokers. For Abramovich, that probably amounts to more than £15m a year.

It is an expensive way to entertain a few footballers, so why does he do it; is there more to it than vanity and pleasure? Edmiston offers two reasons for the booming market in megayachts.

"First, they provide a secure environment and a superb place to entertain," he said. "Second, with developments in technology and communications, it is now easier for global business leaders to be away from their offices and remain in close contact with key people in their organisations."

Might Abramovich see his fleet of yachts as a useful alternative base as he prepares to move on to a new phase in his career? Although he is the major shareholder in Sibneft, the Russian oil company, Gazprom and Rosneft, the rival energy giants, are circling the company and a deal is expected.

If he does sell, Abramovich should emerge with more free cash. It will not guarantee that he keeps the crown for having the biggest private yacht in the world, but it will take a lot to dislodge him from being king of the sea.

I am sure Mr. Putin had good time there incognito. Mr. Abramovich paid for his election campaign what keeps him away from imprisonment. Has he paid all the taxes as required by the Russian law? I have nothing against rich Russians, however I hate ass-kissing policies. Misha Khodorkovski spent his cash on charity purposes instead, though.
