In January 2009, Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw launched the 53.50m (175’6”) Hurricane Run at its yard in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands. This exceptional Feadship was built for a repeat client, whose most recent yacht was the 49.99m (164’) High Chaparral, launched in 2004.

Hurricane Run is a further development of High Chaparral in terms of layout, with a far more contemporary interior by Terrence Disdale. The exterior design brief was to create something new that further enhanced the Feadship look, and De Voogt have succeeded in doing just that. Like High Chaparral, Hurricane Run is named after a prize winning race horse.

“The De Vries family has had a great deal of fun building these two yachts for you,” Henk de Vries told the owners. “At the time of her creation five years ago, High Chaparral was a very high-end boat in technical terms. Hurricane Run is 3.50 meters longer and incorporates all your experiences with and favorite aspects of High Chaparral and optimizes them still further. The remarkable bridge deck aft is a fine example of this. Creating a Feadship is always a team achievement, and we look forward to repeating this winning performance again in the future.”

One key difference between the yachts is the color of the superstructure. While High Chaparral was off-white, Hurricane Run is anthracite. This grey color accentuates the long lines of the yacht, which are softer yet still retain the robust look that was High Chaparral’s hallmark. Another major change is the central location of the staircase on Hurricane Run, which has allowed for the creation of an enormous open-plan main lounge and dining room instead of two separate rooms.

Thanking the owner’s wife, who was intrinsically involved in the project, designer Terrence Disdale described Hurricane Run as having “an interior that is unlike anything we have ever done before. It is 25 years since the Disdale studio first designed an interior at De Vries Feadship (the 52m Rio Rita) and it continues be a pleasure and a privilege to work at this yard.”

The recipient of countless awards, the equine Hurricane Run won the coveted Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe by two lengths in 2005. “This horse was one of the best the world has ever seen,” commented build captain Andy Davies. “It is very fitting that this masterpiece of a yacht has the same name – she too must be one of the best in the world and this is down to the care, attention, dedication and hard work of her builders. Feadship can be very proud of what it has achieved here.”
