“Any designer when asked what is his most interesting and challenging project will almost certainly reply “the one that I am currently creating”. Well this has certainly been true in the case of Project Prospect and we must acknowledge that with Fincantieri Yachting’s invitation to us we are also being invited to share in their history and culture of ship building excellence and with Benetti who have made such an outstanding contribution with so many Superyachts to their credit. In return Laurent Giles can draw from an anthology of projects and our many years of design experience allows us to push the boundaries of Superyacht engineering and technology.
‘Prospect’: anticipation, expectation, future, hope, outlook, promise, panorama, scene, spectacle, view. Commercially of course a ‘prospect’ is a figure on the horizon that brings another challenging client brief.
Who can fail to associate the celebrated Fincantieri brand with the design and construction of Naval vessels? Looking back at the immense tonnage of these ships that have emerged from Fincantieri it is not surprising that we have elected to create our first class contemporarily styled Superyacht that in external appearance alone is reminiscent of the style of a Naval Vessel. We have selected a long waterline and full flared hull forward and that left us with a dilemma over the stem profile for which we sketched three basic options.
But it was generally agreed that the market would not accept the radical raked bow that is so evocative of the Dreadnoughts which although a very interesting concept and one which might be followed on another design, is not quite what we or our clients had in mind.
After presenting our first sketches last June in London Fincantieri likened the concept to that of the Porsche Cayenne with the look of adventure, comfort and performance. Not just an explorer but also a yacht in the true sense of the word: fine lined; fast and able to cruise into those previously inaccessible anchorages.
The exterior was subject to continued development and refinement. It is our standard practice at commencement of any new design to undertake a thorough preliminary technical study, an essential step at the beginning of any new project not least one that is as ground breaking and spectacular as Project Prospect. Initially a parametric study of similar size yachts is followed by a preliminary review of naval architecture; weights; power and stability issues. This work progresses in parallel to the interior design space planning as a continuing design spiral. And it is at this time we start to develop the hull and superstructure lines with the most up to date CAD design tools.
