The global superyacht market experienced another year of substantial growth in 2005
with strong double-digit growth in the number of deliveries and the number of new
contracts signed up. However, looking at the pattern of future deliveries, there is a big
question mark over whether the rate of growth in the market can be sustained.
At the end of 2005 TYRs annual world superyacht market statistical review, the only one that focuses totally on 30-m plus production, shows that 422 contracts make up the world order book, representing a 21.3% rise on the 348 contracts record¬ed at the end of 2004. In addition, the number of deliveries rose 15.3% to a total of 158, compared with the 137 of 2004. It is possible that 2006 may be a peak year, with a record 243 yachts scheduled to be launched. Beyond that the order book presently listed for 2007 is on the slim side, with 124 deliveries. This is not an uncommon position and like previous years it is likely that the production and semi-custom builders will place a good number of orders, which will boost the total order book beyond its current situation post 2006.
Another clear development highlighted by the statistics is that the international spread of newbuild yards is broadening and this is likely to continue. Compared with the 2005 listings, yards in Croatia, Morocco, South Africa and the Maldives make an appear¬ance. There are also additional yards from Egypt and Turkey, among other countries, that reflect the potential growth that these states hold to expand their presence in the superyacht market.
