We are a highly experienced yacht design studio, based in Lymington, on the South Coast of England, although the designs we produce are now built in many corners of the world. It is over thirty years since Rob Humphreys’ first design was launched and in the intervening years the studio’s portfolio has grown to be as varied as it is successful, with a vast range of projects from production cruising yachts and cruiser racers to superyachts, round-the-world racers and America’s Cup challengers.
The main thrust of our current work is in the cruising sector, but we like to think that our strong racing pedigree gives these yachts an added dimension. We are responsible for three major production marques – Oyster, Elan and Southerly – but we also have a strong custom-design tradition which is on-going, with a fairly regular throughput of often highly individualistic projects. In fact our design processes are continually honed by our involvement in some high-profile race campaigns, among them the America’s Cup, Open 60s and now Volvo 70s, with continual investment into our computational capability. Our design work is generated using the latest 3D CAD software, with in-house VPP optimisation and frequent incursion into Computational Fluid Dynamics research and traditional tank and wind tunnel testing methods which we adopt whenever we have an opportunity.
